Trip Summary

This spectacular cycling and hiking adventure provides an ideal opportunity to experience the natural wonders of Fiordland and the enchanting Milford Sound. Nowhere else in New Zealand do the mountains rise up out of the water, rich rain-forests cling to sheer rock faces or waterfalls crash hundreds of metres to the sea below than in our gorgeous Sound. Your journey begins in Queenstown, where you will embark on this amazing journey towards Milford Sound with a morning kayak on the crystal blue waters of Lake Wakatipu, enjoy walking along the famous Kepler, Milford and Routeburn tracks and cycle through Fiordland National Parks' iconic beech forests and superb mountain scenery along the way. In Milford Sound you will board your comfortable floating hotel to explore the magic of this area, with options to swim or walk, before pedalling around Te Anau and the hidden Mavora Lakes site featured in the Lord of the Rings. This sensational journey concludes with a tour of a high country sheep station, afternoon tea and a boat transfer across Lake Wakatipu back to Queenstown.

Trip Grading

To determine the grade of a particular adventure we consider a number of factors. These include the condition of the terrain, the altitude, the number of pass crossings and the length of the trip. The Milford and Fiordland Hike, Bike and Kayak is graded moderate. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and we suggest 60 minutes of aerobic type exercise, (either cycling or jogging) three to five times a week for the three months leading up to your trip. You will need to be able to walk for 3-4 hours at a time on undulating paths. Most of the cycle trail is hard packed gravel, we recommend plenty of practise biking on gravel and uphills before your tour to make the experience a lot more fun. The tour is fully supported and if at any stage you feel like having a rest from cycling you will be able to ride in the support vehicle. You do not need to have any previous experience of kayaking before you join this tour, it is an introductory kayak excursion. You will receive instructions and a full briefing by your experienced kayak guide before you set off on the water.

Your guide will collect the group from a central city location around 8:00am and we will have a tour briefing and then a bike fitting. Then it’s time to drive to Glenorchy where we take an easy 45 minute kayak on Lake Wakatipu to Pigeon Island, a wildlife paradise. The scenic mountain landscapes towering over the lake make this a highlight of the trip. After paddling back from the island, there could be a chance for a swim as we enjoy lunch on the shore. We then head back to Queenstown where we will explore the nearby Queenstown Trails by bike. After time to refresh we then head out to our first group dinner to talk over plans for the next few days. Cycling Distance: Up to 20km

Meals:  L,D

From Queenstown we drive the narrow lakeside road alongside Lake Wakitipu to the old steam railway town of Kingston. From here we connect with the Around The Mountains cycle trail, a dedicated cycle path that allows you to enjoy the scenery of sheep and cattle country surrounded by spectacular mountains free from traffic. We stop for lunch at the remote Five Rivers station cafe, and then load up the bikes to drive to Te Anau, the gateway to our coming adventures exploring Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound. This afternoon we enjoy a walk along the lower section of the Kepler Track, one of NZ's Great Walks. We walk from Rainbow Reach and follow the Waiau River through beautiful beech forest to the Lake Te Anau outlet. We transfer to our hotel in Te Anau and are then free to explore the town and make our own dinner arrangements. Cycling Distance: Up to 50km / Up to 32miles Walking Distance: 9km / 6 miles taking 3hours Note: Tonight you will need to pack an overnight bag for the next night of the tour. When staying overnight in Milford Sound you will be able to take a small bag and the majority of your luggage will be secured in the vehicle.

This morning we drive into the Fiordland National Park amid the beech forests and mountains, that the region is famous for. The beautiful Milford road tracks through the wilderness and we stop to enjoy some of the short walks and views on the way, before arriving at The Divide. From here we walk to Key Summit, a 3 hour return hike which forms part of the Routeburn Track, gives spectacular views of the Hollyford Valley and Humboldt and Earl mountain ranges. We drive through the Homer Tunnel and onto Milford Sound, stopping en-route to explore the famous Chasm walkway before arriving at our accommodation for the night, our very own floating hotel! The boat takes us out into the Milford Sound, where there is the option to take a tender boat to shore for a short nature walk along the famous Milford Track (1.5 hours). Once back onboard the boat, we enjoy a wholesome meal before sailing into the open seas beyond before returning to a sheltered spot for the night. Remember to take a walk on deck after dark to admire the amazing stars of the Southern Hemisphere. Note to solo travellers: All cabins on the Milford Sound Cruise are shared.

By 9am the next morning, after a hearty breakfast and further exploring of the fiord, we return to shore and we bid a sad farewell to the majestic Milford Sound. We climb back to the Homer Tunnel by bus, if weather conditions allow, we hop on the bikes here and enjoy the wonderful cycle down the Milford Sound Highway and along the very quiet and scenic Hollyford road. From here there is chance to walk to see the 275m high Humboldt Falls (30 mins return) which are particularly spectacular after rain. We have lunch and transfer by bus back to Te Anau, stopping at more view points along the way to admire the wonderful Fiordland scenery and rain forest vegetation. We spend a second night in Te Anau and meet in the early evening for our final group dinner together. Cycling Distance: Hollyford Road 27km / 17miles

Meals:  B,L,D

Out of Te Anau we journey into the hidden Mavora Lakes, a site of scenes from Lord of the Rings. We cycle by the lakeside and through the beech forest before continuing on to the isolated Von Valley for lunch. We farewell our supporting coach as we cycle on to the shores of Lake Wakatipu and down to Mount Nicholas station. Here we are greeted by stunning views of the surrounding mountains and snow covered Mount Earnslaw at the head of the lake. We are met by our hosts and shown around the remote high country sheep station, before enjoying a light ploughman's afternoon tea. Our tour concludes with a boat journey across the shimmering waters of Lake Wakatipu back to Queenstown. Its time to say a sad goodbye as we pick you up from the wharf and drop you off in downtown Queenstown. Cycling Distance: Up to 46km / 28miles

Great trip again. Excellent guide and fun people in our group. Planning another trip next year with one of the fellow travellers.

Jeffrey S, Australia, 17 Apr 2019

We absolutely loved our trip and would have no hesitation in going with Adventure South again. Extremely impressed with the organisation of the trip, it was just so easy. When you consider everything that is included the trip is great value for money. Our two guides were amazing and never got tired of all our questions and requests. We would have preferred a little more cycling. But otherwise we enjoyed this trip immensely. Thank you to all at AS. The weather certainly helped. Riding the Milford Road in glorious sunshine was just magnificent. Spending the night on Milford sound was magical. Spending the last day riding through the Von Valley with our new pals and awesome guides was truly special, including the wonderful smorgasbord picnic lunch prepared by Sean, which we enjoyed in a tranquil meadow next to the stream.

From my initial website enquiry and dealings with the sales team, including the wonderful advice to consider an e-bike right up until the end of the tour - I was very impressed. The tour itself was well planned - and our guides - Chris and Sean - were wonderful. They were helpful and their assistance and care for the group was above and beyond what I would have expected. The tour was modified to cope with our individual group. The kayaking was fun and the operator also very knowledgeable and helpful. Lunches and snacks were great, and restaurant meals seamless. The days were packed tightly with activity - and our 5 days seemed like we got 10 days worth of things included! A very happy customer! If you are uncertain about your capabilities - give it a go! If you are unsure if you can cycle that far or up the hills - try an e-bike. The physical preparation recommended is also very beneficial.

The guides were amazing! Both guides were knowledgeable about the area and were terrific at sharing their knowledge during the hikes and drive time. The guides made sure meals were quickly served when we arrived at the restaurant and always ensured each tour members food needs were met! I can't say enough good things about this trip! Bring lots of Bushman insect gel - the sandflies are plentiful.

Cindi S, Australia, 18 Apr 2019

Interesting mixture of different activities-could be a little more kayaking. The highlight was the kayaking incl. the guidance and explanations on the flora of the island we explored. Be careful about the hikes-wear hiking shoes.

Angelika J, Germany, 31 Jan 2019

Brilliant guides, brilliant variety of activities, brilliant locations, all taking place in the most brilliant scenery. What more can you ask for - it was brilliant!

Natalie I, Australia, 30 Apr 2019

Excellent! Sean and Chris were amazing. Both had exceptional knowledge and good partnership with balance of strengths. Sean, the joker and highly organised, and Chris with his depth of knowledge of plant and animal life which added a lot of knowledge, appreciation and curiosity on the trip.

Tracey D, Australian, 30 Jan 2019

A truly lovely trip. Amazing scenery, Iain was a fantastic tour leader and Wayne lovely too. Cannot rate them high enough, already trying to book to come back!

Michelle C, 21 Nov 2018

If you like cycling, a bit of hiking, dramatic landscapes and exceptional organisation that feels effortless... this is the 5 day trip for you. From the moment guide Sean collected our group in Queenstown, we knew we were in safe hands. Capable, relaxed, kind, informative and personable, Sean haps to make what is an epic itinerary truly outstanding. Plus he can back a trailer like nobody's business. Every day was magical, from the 40 or so km loop cycle on the first day from the lower Shotover Bridge to Arrowtown (or Gibbston) and back, to the Kingston to Five Rivers leg to the ride that saw us arrive at Walter Peak Station. And every 10km or so, when the trail allowed, there'd be Sean calmly waiting just to ensure we were safe, fed, watered, not lost. It's all the best things of being a child, but as an adult. The night on Milford Sound aboard the Wanderer was also a delight, making this an utterly fabulous tour. Thank you.

Elisabeth E, Auckland, New Zealand, 10 Mar 2018

Such a well organised trip, with full days, exciting trails/walks. Great food/snacks. What really made our trip was the people we were lucky enough to be travelling with and our exceptional guide Sean. He was so knowledgable, personable and went the extra mile to ensure we were all happy. 'Five star service'.

Wayne and Sonia P, South West Rocks, Australia, 10 Mar 2018

All aspects were well organised, we really felt that our holiday experience was what mattered most. Lots of different aspects to enjoy - cycling, tramping, mini-cruise, sheep station. Great laughs with the rest of the group.

D & H Bartlett, UK, 10 Mar 2018

Each day was a highlight - such a fabulous showcase of NZ beauty. Incredible scenery every day. Well informed friendly guides. Maximising each day ability to change schedule and explore when weather wasn't great. A beautiful country impressed with thought put into tourism industry. Excellent guide. Options were provided as weather was difficult. Good food! Cycle routes well prepared.

Don Munnings, Canada
