From beachfront retreats to sub-alpine paradises, New Zealand is home to some of the most remote Lodge accommodation in the world.

With limited accessibility, and little access to wifi, an overnight stay in a lodge is the perfect way to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life. Read on to learn more about our 3 of the most remote lodges that we stay at on our hiking trips.

1. Okaka Lodge

At 890m above sea level, Okaka Lodge holds prime position at the top of the Hump Ridge walking Track. Commanding extensive views of Te Waewae Bay, the Waiau Valley, and Takitimas along NZ's Southern Coast, you'll struggle to find a lodge in a more rugged and untouched landscape.

Okaka lodge can sleep up to 40 people and is fully equipped with flush toilets, hot showers, gas fire, licensed bar and shop, and even hot water bottles - everything you need for a comfortable stay during your 3 day walk on the track.

Wake up to an incredible sunrise with hot porridge cooked for you by the lodge hosts before taking a morning stroll on the boardwalk track through a sea of mountain daisies, alpine buttercups, and hebes.

Accessible only by foot, you can experience a nigh at Okaka Lodge on day 2 of our Tuatapere Humpridge Track walking trip. You'll even get a helicopter ride to the start of the track!

2. Nydia Lodge

At the top of the South Island, nestled on the shores of Nydia Bay is On the Track Lodge. With it's unique, rustic and wooden design, it truly is a highlight of our Marlborough Sounds and Abel Tasman Trails hiking trip, where we stay on day 3.

Only accessible by foot or by boat, the lodge marks the halfway point for the beautiful Nydia Walking Track in Pelorus Sound; a 4-5 hour walk from either Kamu Bay (south end) or Duncan Bay/Tennyson Inlet (north end).

With it's own dining room, guest lounge, library, fireplace, kitchen, shower and toilet facilities, this 24 guest lodge is the perfect place for both walkers and mountain bikers to unwind and step away from the outside world.

Whether you're swimming, walking, reading, or simply enjoying the surroundings, a visit to On the Track Lodge is a must do during the summer.

3. Martins Bay Lodge

Amidst the wild, rugged and isolated landscapes of New Zealand's famous Hollyford Track you'll find the elusive and luxurious Martin's Bay Lodge, where we stay on day 5 of our Fiordland, Hollyford and Stewart Island Trails trip.

Equipped with dining and lounge area's, drying rooms, separate flush toilet, shower facilities and unlimited hot water, this lodge has everything you need and more.

Cosy up in the warmth of an open fire, indulge in fine cuisine prepared by your hosts, and revel in jaw dropping landscapes from the warmth and comfort of the lodge after an inspiring days walking.

Accessible only by helicopter or boat, the lodge is exclusive to guided walkers, giving you time to re-energise before continuing your walk along the Hollyford and Routeburn Tracks.
