Blog home / Plans for Three New Central Otago Cycle Trails
The Otago Central Rail trail is New Zealand’s most iconic cycle trail and has consistently been named the top cycle trail in NZ. The good news is, the Central Otago trail network is expanding!
Plans for the first of three new cycle trails in the area are underway and have reached the consent stage. The proposed Lake Dunstan Trail will pass through the Cromwell Gorge from Cromwell to Clyde on the opposite side of the lake from State Highway 8.
The trail will be part of the $26 million New Zealand Cycle Trail Project to build 536km of trails connecting Cromwell to Clyde and the Otago Central Rail Trail and connecting Queenstown via the Kawarau Gorge Trail, and connecting to the popular township Wanaka.
The Central Otago Queenstown Trail Network Trust has lodged an application with the Central Otago District Council asking for land-use consent to build the trail between Cromwell and Clyde.
The trail would be a dedicated cycling and walking trail and there would be no vehicle access other than for maintenance.
We’re looking forward to adding these to some our NZ Cycle Trail itineraries already!
