Blog home / A Kiwi's Point of View: Lake Dunstan & 3 Gorges
Coming back from the Lake Dunstan & 3 Gorges cycle tour, there were so many highlights throughout the 5 day that it's hard to really put into words... but I will try.
Roxburgh Gorge
I really enjoyed the vastness of the Roxburgh Gorge. It felt so remote and yet we were very close to civilisation! The historical nature of the gorge, especially delivered in our jetboat tour by Laurence, was so interesting to learn about all the miners that lived along the river bank when Gold Rush was booming in the mid 1800's.
Lake Dunstan Trail
Riding along the Lake Dunstan Trail was incredible, especially the "clip on" trail sections and bridges. The riding was fantastic, As a regular cyclist, there was just the right amount of challenge climbing up the mountain but you are rewarded by these incredible views of Central Otago below.
Accommodation
The accommodation each night was another one of my favourite highlights. It was a perfect fit to each stage of our tour and each operator had their own personal touches - they weren't just big chain providers with no character.
Wānaka Outlet Trail
The Wānaka Outlet Trail will always hold a special place in my heart, it's always nice to ride a section of trail so close to a bustling town and yet feel like you are in pristine untouched nature by the river.
Dinner each night
The dinners were delicious every night, and as someone with a dietary requirement, I was pleasantly surprised by the food options in these smaller towns.
I hope I inspired you enough to ride the Lake Dunstan and 3 Gorges cycle tour for yourself because I honestly was blown away by the hospitality and landscapes of the Central Otago region.
