Trip highlights

  • Some of the most varied running that Canterbury, the West Coast and the Southern Lakes can offer
  • Run the sweet beech forest trails of Castle Hill then part of the Te Araroa Trail and a classic low-level alpine route by completing the Cass – Lagoon Track
  • Discover some hidden West Coast gems that few get to run
  • Tick off two classic Wanaka trail running routes – the Rocky Diamond and Wanaka Skyline – while soaking up the gobsmacking mountain views and varied trails that these offer
  • Explore the less-visited side of Queenstown that the locals love
  • Seasoned kiwi trail runner Mal Law will guide and inspire you through some of the best tracks in New Zealand

Weaving through beech forest, tussock lands, jewel-like lakes, wild West Coach beaches and towering waterfalls, this 8 day, fully supported, and guided trail running trip lets you explore some of NZ’s best trails between Christchurch and Queenstown. Warm up on some sweet Craigieburn single track before taking on an alpine classic that includes part of the Te Araroa trail, then hit the varied West Coast trails that lead through pristine bush, along wild beaches and climb to alpine summits with amazing views.

Crossing the Hasst Pass into the Southern Lakes region will experience the twin delights of running Rocky Mountain and the Wanaka Skyline before heading over the Crown Range into Queenstown where we link together Lake Wakatipu with Lake Dispute and Moke Lake on a beautiful lake-inspired run to finish the week on a high. We spend our final night in Queenstown where we have a celebratory dinner to reflect on a unique, challenging and rewarding trail running adventure.

As with many great runs, often the start and finish are miles apart which then requires tricky transport arrangements. In order to provide an effective and efficient running experience for you, we are providing transportation, comfortable accommodation and two running guides who have first-hand knowledge of the trails which they have personally selected.

It’s a road trip unlike any other. It’s a trail running trip unlike any other. It’s an unbeatable experience that’s unlike any other!

We will meet up with the Adventure South NZ bus and guide/driver outside Cathedral Junction on Worcester Street at 10 am, then we’ll be on our way to Castle Hill, just 90 mins drive away. We will stop enroute at the legendary Sheffield Pie Shop and bakery. After a quick briefing we’ll take to some sweet local trails to get the legs warmed up for the week ahead. Expect idyllic beech forest, buff single track and a few short, sharp climbs and descents to wake up your calfs and quads. We will spend the night at the legendary Bealey Hotel where we may or may not see a moa! Running distance: 10-15km

Meals:  L,D

A short drive takes us to the start of the Cass – Lagoon Trail, an alpine classic that follows well-marked single track connecting two sheltered valleys. We will pass over two low alpine saddles and traverse forest, alpine scrub and stream beds. This is likely to be the longest run of the week and includes around 1300m of climb. The bus will be waiting for us at the end of this point-to-pointer and will soon be whisking us over Arthur’s Pass to the West Coast where we spend a night in the coolest little town on the Coast, Hokitika. We stay at the Beachfront Hotel. Running distance: 33km

Meals:  B,L

Today, the keen among us get to do two runs! First up we’ll run a beautiful 10km on moderate-technical single track in the bush along the western shore of Lake Kaniere, a short way inland from Hokitika. This is another point-to-point run which finishes with lunch at the bus. We then have the choice of a cruisy afternoon relaxing by the lake or doing a grunty 1,000m climb up to the open tussock tops of Mt Tuhua for stunning views over the West Coast. This second ‘run’ will actually be more of a fast walk. We then jump onboard the bus and transfer to Franz Josef where we will overnight in the Holiday Park. Running distance: 10 - 18km

Meals:  B,L

Today you will be encouraged to take up the challenge of three runs! The first will be an early morning excursion doing a 9km loop on sweet, easy inland bush trail with return via a wonderfully wild beach. If we’re lucky, we’ll be rewarded with some of the very finest views of the Southern Alps. Moving south in the bus we’ll also have the opportunity for a short (4.5km) easy leg stretcher around stunning Lake Matheson and, another hour or so south, an easy 5km out-and-back bush run to a largely unknown, stunning wild west coast beach – our special little secret spot! We finish the day by driving to Haast township where we spend the night at the Haast River Holiday Park and a group meal out at the one and only Hard Antler bar/restaurant.. Running distance: up to 19km

Meals:  B,L,D

We start by driving up the spectacular Haast Valley, perhaps stopping to see some huge waterfalls. Near Haast Pass we’ll get out to stretch our legs with a short (3km) out-and-back to take a look at the world-famous-in-NZ Blue Pools. Continuing on to Wanaka we will then tackle one of the best short runs in the country – the 8km/500m ascent Diamond Lake & Rocky Mt loop, where we should once again be rewarded with stunning views over Lake Wanaka and surrounding mountains. Accommodation for the next two nights at the Wanaka Lakeview Holiday Park. Running distance: up to 11km (with potential for more)

Meals:  B,L

After a couple of shorter, easier days you should be ready for another biggie – yes, it’s time to tackle the ridiculously awesome Wanaka Skyline Trail. This point-to-point classic is a real beauty. It takes in two summits – Roy’s Peak & Mt Alpha – and delivers some of the best known, most stunning views in the land. The bus will be waiting at the far end of the trail for us and will take us back into Wanaka for a second night there. Running distance: 24km

Meals:  B,L

We’ll start the day by driving over the Crown Range to NZ’s adventure capital, Queenstown. From the shores of Lake Wakatipu, we’ll run a fabulously varied 27.5km route that takes in some beautiful bush, big hill country and two gorgeous lakes – Dispute & Moke. It’s a stunning run that asks your legs for another 900m of climbing, but it’s worth every aching muscle! Shorter options will also be possible for those who are feeling a little weary. We enjoy a final celebratory dinner then overnight at Queenstown Blue Peaks Lodge. Running distance: 27.5kms

Meals:  B,L,D

All good things come to an end and after a last breakfast together the tour officially finishes. But if you’re not flying home until later in the day, or if you’re staying on for a bit, then there’s the opportunity to do some unguided running in the company of new-found friends. We can help with any logistics and would suggest either Ben Lomond or the sumptuous network of trails around Arrowtown as possibilities. The bus returns north and you can catch a ride back to Christchurch should you need.

Moderate to Challenging

With no formal grading system for Trail Running, we are guided by distances and personal experience having run all these trails in preparation for this tour. Distances can vary according to personal fitness and desire, although some trails such as the Cass-Lagoon Trail are a through run requiring a total commitment. Trails have been chosen for their interest, variation of scenery and trail surface and challenge. Generally the runs are on well formed DOC trails with a good running surface. Runners will have the option to sit out or modify a particular days run in discussion with the guide.
