Take a ride back in time along this unique heritage trail showcasing the region's rich history from early Maori moa hunts to the first Chinese gold miners. A large portion of the trail follows the Clutha Mata-au River with it's glacial blue waters, which flow from Lake Wanaka to the Pacific Ocean, contrasting the mix of rugged Central Otago landscapes, vivid green farmland and colourful orchards. The mighty river provides an inspiring back drop for cyclists as we learn more about the important events that have helped shape the historic goldmining region, including influences such as European pastoral farming and modern-day hydro power. Our supported trip along the Clutha Gold Cycle Trail encompasses the newly established Queenstown, Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold Cycleways and we'll explore them by bike and even jetboats. We travel north via Dunedin, the city with the world's steepest street and where we visit the famous Albatross colony on the Otago Peninsula. We explore the Victorian Precinct in the quaint town of Oamaru before concluding our journey in Christchurch.

The night before your tour begins your guide will call your pre tour accommodation to advise what time they will collect you the following morning. If you are out when the guide calls they will leave a message at your lodgings reception for you. We start our first day in Queenstown with a short drive to the historical goldmining township of Arrowtown. Here we will explore the quaint township and have a bike fitting and safety check. We enjoy our first cycle on the riverside trail through to the Kawarau Bungy Bridge. We'll then drive through to Alexandra in the afternoon and cycle the Roxburgh Gorge Trail with a delightful jetboat transfer en route. The Roxburgh Gorge is a stunning landscape of steep hillsides strewn with giant boulders leading down to a willow-lined river and lake. We cycle into the lodge accommodation for the evening in Roxburgh. Cycle distance: Arrowtown to the historic Kawarau River bridge 14km Alexandra to Roxburgh 34km

Meals:  L,D

From the lodge we descend from the Roxburgh Dam into the network of orchards and rural farmland alongside the Clutha River. We'll squeeze past Dumbarton Rock which once stretched all the way across the river and finish todays ride in Millers Flat. We'll transfer to our accommodation in Lawrence that we'll use as our base for 2 nights. Cycle distance - 31kms

Meals:  B,L,D

We retrace our drive back to yesterdays finish and then continue with the Millennium Track into Beaumont where we have an exciting jetboat trip, exploring the mighty Clutha River and travelling upstream beneath the historic Beaumont Bridge through breath taking white water shutes, rocky outcrops and shallows. Following lunch at the rural hotel we complete the last of the cycle into Lawrence and the chance to explore this small historical and charming village and the first mining strike at Gabriel's Gully. Cycle distance – 47kms

Meals:  B,L

A short drive takes us to Dunedin and the beautiful Otago Peninsula, home of New Zealand's only castle and the Royal Albatross. We'll begin our ride on the Peninsular and enjoy a stopover at Larnach Castle known for it's sometimes scandalous and tragic history. Enjoy a cuppa and a walk through the extensive castle gardens. After lunch there is the opportunity to visit the famous Royal Albatross Colony before our coastal ride to Dunedin. Cycle distance - 30-40kms

Meals:  B,L,D

We can ride some more today as we head north to Oamaru, leaving behind those who wish to finish in Dunedin. Before we depart Dunedin though, our first stop is Baldwin Street, reputedly the “steepest street in the world”, for a short but challenging early morning stroll! Then depending on time, the weather and what the group wants to do we will pop into the famous Fleur’s café in the picturesque Moreaki Village for a coffee. Or onto Moeraki Boulders – we might even be able to do both! From here we commence the final quiet 24km coastal ride, along the cliff tops and past farms, that takes us into Oamaru. Here in the old warehouse quarter the early buildings are being restored creating a fascinating opportunity to explore the past as you relax at a local cafe. Back on the road again we drive across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch where we will deliver you to your chosen accommodation. Trip concludes on arrival around 5.30-6pm Cycle distance - approx 24km

We provide you with the services of two guides for many of our trips, (this may depend on the size of the group). All are certified in first aid and CPR and many are trained bike mechanics. To check out more about our guides see our ‘About us’ page on our website (www.advsouth.com).

Introductory to Moderate

To determine the grade of a particular adventure we consider a number of factors. These include the condition of the terrain, the altitude, the number of pass crossings and the length of the trip. Clutha Gold is graded introductory to Moderated. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and we suggest 30 minutes of aerobic type exercise, (either cycling or jogging) three times a week for the three months leading up to your trip. The main factor for this trail is that the cycling is on hard packed gravel - if you can get in some cycling on gravel before your tour it will make the experience a lot more fun. The cycle trail is undulating so you will need to be comfortable cycling on gravel up small hills or switchbacks.
